An increase in the desire to save can ultimately lead to a decrease in the realised level of savings: William H. Branson (1979), Macroeconomic Theory and Policy, p 40. The Paradox of Thrift is discussed at length in Paul A. Samuelson (1964), Economics, and in David Begg, Stanley Fischer and Rüdiger Dornbusch (1984), Economics. It was also stated in John Maynard Keynes (1936), The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, chapter 7, p 84 and by Bernard Mandeville (1714), The Fable of the Bees. The insight is not new. It appears, for instance, in Proverbs, 11:24–25.
